Arrests and citations

Arrests and citations mark the initial point of contact a youth has with the juvenile justice system. In the County of Santa Clara, this includes both paper tickets (e.g., citations, summons to appear) and physical arrests made by law enforcement agencies.

This section outlines how youth enter the system including the count of arrests/citations, offense types (i.e., misdemeanor, felony, status, infraction), and most common offenses in the selected calendar years. Of note, infractions are the least serious offenses, such as traffic violations and littering; status offense means an offense that would not be considered criminal if committed by an adult, such as school truancy, curfew violations, or possession of alcohol or cigarettes.

Demographics

This section highlights demographic information for youth entering the system and where they lived at the time of contact.

Information in this section helps us examine disproportionality at the initial point of contact with the juvenile justice system.
